Can Darkskin Girls Wear Red Lipstick? Ask A$AP Rocky

A few years ago, dark skin girls were required to wear dark lip shades matching their skin tones. Their lip colors couldn't "pop", excluding them from the bright lipstick trend that was going on. A lot of models and dark skin women all over the world resisted this exclusion and proudly displayed their bold lip colors and they looked beautiful while doing it. Now, it's not uncommon to see a beautiful, dark chocolate sister rocking her favorite lip color that draws attention to her beautiful lips and overall style. That's why it's so surprising that rapper A$AP Rocky would say otherwise.

In a recent interview in fashion and beauty blog The Coveteur, the rapper was interviewed on his beauty regimen. After detailing how he maintains his almost blemish-free skin and notorious hairstyle, he went on to tell readers his opinions on women's beauty.  He started out by stating that he prefers natural beauty, meaning little to no makeup to avoid harming your skin. Good, right? But then he said this and it all went downhill:

"But for real, for me, I feel like with the red lipstick thing it all depends on the pair of complexion. I’m just being for real. You have to be fair skinned to get away with that. Just like if you were to wear like—f*cking for instance, what do dark skin girls have that you know fair skinned girls cant do… Purple lipstick? Naw, that looks stupid on all girls! Purple lipstick, guys! Like, what the f*ck…"

Black entertainers like Trina and Toccara Jones attacked the artist. They accused him of self-hate, being a black man himself. A lot of other sources are questioning if he only dates non-black and light skin women. Even if he does believe this, he should be aware of the long divide in the black community between light skin and dark skin women. Dark skin has long been synonymous with the word "ugly" stemming from slavery when light skin usually indicated racial mixing, which was preferred under a racist, oppressive society. Unfortunately  remnants of this divide has survived in the mentalities of our men and our youth. There are more dark skin black women proclaiming their beauty, goddesses from head to toe, but statements like the one made by A$AP Rocky seems to put a wrench in our progress.
