Dress for Success: Interview Tips

The first impression you make on a potential employer, internship site, volunteer agency or for anything in that matter is the most important one.  The first judgment an interviewer makes is going to be based on how you look and what you are wearing.  Because of this it’s always important to dress professionally for an interview, even if the work environment is a casual one.

What is the appropriate dress code for an interview?

·          A suit that is navy, black or dark grey
·          The suit skirt should be long enough so you can sit down comfortably, make sure to wear neutral or jet black pantyhose
·          Have a coordinated blouse: that covers ALL of you
·          Simple black pants always work
·          No “loud” colors or prints
·          Wear conservative shoes
·          Limited jewelry : no dangling earrings or arms full or bracelets
·          No jewelry is better than cheap jewelry
·          Put your hair in a professional style : a bun, slicked back ponytail, or just a straight do
·          Very light make up and perfume: a nice daytime look
·          Neatly manicured clean nails: once again avoid “loud” colors and designs
·          Carry a portfolio and always bring two resumes just in case
·          A purse should be very simple, no chains, no sparkle, basically the less color the better

What should NOT be brought on an interview?

·          Gum: you should not be chewing as you speak in any situation and especially not this one
·          Cell phone: if you have to bring it leave it on silent, make sure all alerts and alarms are off, and do not let it be seen
·          Ipod: this should be out your ears before you walk into the building
·          If you have a lot of piercings: leave some of the rings at home, wear  a retainer in facial ones
·          Cover tattoos

More Tips:

·          Before you even think about going on a interview make sure you have the proper attire that fits
·          Get your clothes ready the night before so you lessen your stress level in the morning
·          If you have to ask yourself “should I be wearing this” you probably shouldn’t
·          After the interview wash your clothes so they are already clean for your next interview
·          Bring a breath mint and use it before you enter the building
·          Give your self extra time to get there, arrive early so you breath and relax
·           Being too early can be problematic, never more then 15 minutes early
·          Don’t “squeeze”  in a interview: give it time

Just remember: It’s always better to be over dressed then under dressed.  Dress for success and it will give you exactly that.
